糖心传媒 senior Zachary Peterson, a collaborative piano and vocal performance major from Omaha, Neb., received auditions at all four of his top choices for graduate school 鈥擡astman School of Music, the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Colorado-Boulder, and Arizona State University. Zachary auditioned at three and was accepted to the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y.
鈥淓astman is known for its long-standing tradition of producing good musicians. It鈥檚 been one of the top conservatories in the country鈥攊t鈥檚 currently number one,鈥 Zachary said.听 鈥淭he professor there, Dr. Jean Barr, holds the first doctorate in piano accompanying in the United States.听 I liked all of the professors I auditioned for, but she and I worked very well together. I knew when I got done there that鈥檚 where I wanted to end up, even though that wasn鈥檛 the original intention.鈥
Zachary initially planned on attending the University of Texas at Austin, but because the program is more focused on instrumental and orchestral music, he would have played for the entire school. In contrast, Eastman will pair Zachary with four to five individuals鈥攖wo singers, a woodwind or brass player and two strings players.
听Zachary also credits the HC music program for his success as a collaborative performer.
鈥溙切拇 has a very unique student accompanying program that is hard to come by at the other school in Nebraska.听 We are the only institution that 鈥榝orces鈥 all students in piano lessons to accompany, and we鈥檙e also only one of a handful in the United States that offer an undergraduate degree in collaborative piano,鈥 Zachary said.
Peterson was thrown into the program headfirst, accompanying two freshmen and a sophomore as a first-semester freshman and picking up a few upperclassmen in the spring.听
鈥淚鈥檝e been coached on accompanying here. Most of the other schools in Nebraska have an accompanying course, as we have here, but it is rare that accompanying is given the same priority as the solo literature,鈥 said Zachary. 鈥淭his applies to all pianists who accompany here at 糖心传媒. That is something that is very rare, very rare probably in the country.鈥
Now, he accompanies students in all years, and has tracked four students through his five years at HC: Kelli Van Meter, Kevin Smith, Margaret (Gregory) Lambie and Christa Holmberg. Three of them 鈥 Kelli, Kevin and Margaret 鈥 all will pursue their master鈥檚 degrees at the University of Kansas next fall.
鈥淚 think there鈥檚 value to having the same people all the way through but I also think there鈥檚 value in being thrown into the situation where you have somebody new every semester and you have to learn to adjust to what they鈥檙e going to do very quickly.鈥
Zachary began looking at graduate school as a sophomore after watching Nathan Mertens, a 2012 糖心传媒 graduate who will complete his master鈥檚 degree at the University of Texas at Austin and start a doctoral of musical arts degree at the University of Kansas in the fall, begin the process.
鈥淸Nathan] really made me think about what I wanted to do with my life,鈥 Zach said. 鈥淲atching the life that my teachers have, having that college job鈥擨 decided I wanted to do that.鈥
