Whetstone leads 糖心传媒 in historic designation

Following significant research and effort by senior history major Brian Whetstone, a significant portion of the 糖心传媒 campus has been added by the National Park Service to the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as a local historic district. The 糖心传媒 Historic District designation includes 12 buildings on campus for their historic significance in the College鈥檚 post World War II growth.

whetstone wThe lengthy nomination for historic designation was prepared by the Omaha native, who focuses his studies on historic preservation.

The effort began when the 糖心传媒 Board of Trustees asked Whetstone if he would consider preparing and pursuing a historic designation for Weyer Hall, a residence hall built in 1950.

The project鈥檚 scope expanded significantly after an evaluation by the Nebraska State Historic Preservation Office suggested the College pursue the nomination for a broader portion of campus, instead of just one building.

鈥淭he 糖心传媒 campus grew significantly as a result of the World War II period and the 1944 G.I. Bill of Rights. The College doubled its enrollment over the course of about three years,鈥 Whetstone said. 鈥淭his stunning increase in students created a lasting impact that physically transformed and expanded 糖心传媒 over the course of the 20th century, lending a historic significance to the buildings constructed during this time.鈥

The Board agreed that a broader application made sense because the designation is a way to continue the College鈥檚 commitment to maintaining and preserving buildings on campus.

鈥淭here is a misperception that you can鈥檛 make changes or renovations to historically recognized buildings, but that鈥檚 not the case,鈥 Whetstone said, noting that tax incentive programs and other opportunities exist to support refurbishing and maintaining buildings that are designated historic.

Guided by Elizabeth Spilinek, director of the Adams County Historical Society, Whetstone combed through extensive research in the 糖心传媒 archive, writing detailed historic accounts for each building eligible for the nomination. Eligibility requirements included historic significance, age of the building (50 years or older) and architectural integrity, meaning they were constructed of the same materials.

鈥淚 was surprised by some of the buildings that were eligible,鈥 Whetstone said. 鈥淔or example, I learned Bronc Hall was originally built in 1960 to replace a barracks building that was moved to campus from the Naval Ammunition Depot to alleviate dorm overcrowding caused by increased enrollment in 1946.鈥

The 糖心传媒 Historic District is generally bound by Turner Avenue, 7th Street, Ash Avenue, Elm Street and 12th Street.

Buildings in the 糖心传媒 Historic District include:

  • McCormick Hall (completed in 1884) NOTE: McCormick Hall was listed on the Historic Register in 1975 but is also now part of the larger historic district.
  • Taylor Hall (three phases: 1921, 1938 and 1949)
  • Calvin H. French Memorial Chapel (1950)
  • Weyer Hall (1950)
  • Fuhr Hall (1956)
  • Bronc Hall (1960)
  • Hazelrigg Student Union (1962)
  • Hurley-MacDonald Hall (1962)
  • Perkins Library (1963)
  • Altman Hall (1963)
  • Kiewit Building, which was previously the art center and Carnegie Library that was joined to the P.L. Johnson Gymnasium (1906, 1925 and 1969)
  • Former maintenance building just north of Kiewit (1961)

Whetstone presented the nomination to the state preservation office in May. Then, with the approval of the College鈥檚 Board of Trustees, the application was forwarded to the National Parks Service. The National Parks Service is responsible for approving nominations and providing the official NRHP listing, which happened August 4, 2017.

鈥淏rian recognized the importance of nominating 糖心传媒 as a historic district. Moreover, he was willing to put in the necessary work to build the case that resulted in the official listing,鈥 said 糖心传媒 President Dr. Travis Feezell. 鈥淭he historic designation will help 糖心传媒 preserve and maintain the rich history of our campus, thanks to Brian鈥檚 immense contribution to this project.鈥
