LocalGlobal, a student organization at 糖心传媒 geared toward raising awareness about hunger and homelessness at the local, national and global levels, is hosting a series activities beginning Friday, November 9 for Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week.
鈥淗eld in November, before Thanksgiving, Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week is a nationwide campaign on campuses to remind us to give what we can and to be thankful for what we have,鈥 said Dr. Jean Heriot, director of Service Learning and faculty sponsor of LocalGlobal.
The schedule includes a meal-packing event in conjunction with Hearts & Hands Against Hunger of Hastings (HHAH), a sandwich-making and sack lunch-packing event to benefit Open Table in Hastings and a 鈥淔amily Feud鈥 style trivia night.
Activities begin Friday, November 9 with the HHAH meal-packing event. The meals will be distributed to communities impacted by the recent hurricanes. This year LocalGlobal鈥檚 goal is to pack 100,000 meals.
鈥淭hese events are very important to not only raise awareness of hunger and homelessness on a local, national and global level, but they allow us to make a difference as well,鈥 said Mandy Amberg, chair of Local Global and a senior biology major from Lincoln, Nebraska. 鈥淐oming together a s a campus and community to help those in need is a very impactful and rewarding experience.鈥
Activities conclude with the Open Table sack lunch-packing event on Wednesday, November 14. Sack lunches will be distributed to community members through no questions asked the Open Table Sack Lunch Program. The event builds off another long-time partnership between the college and the local community organization.
