Laura Arnold, 2015 recipient of the Gregory Plock Scholarship at 糖心传媒, will be giving a lecture titled 鈥淭he Spectrum and Beyond: Spurring Conversation about Autism鈥 at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, April 28, in Wilson Auditorium on campus.
For every 68 children, one is affected by autism spectrum disorders, Arnold noted in her abstract describing the lecture. As the rates seem to increase, so does the conversation surrounding autism. Many of these conversations are filled with questions and misconceptions regarding the causes and treatments of autism.
This lecture is aimed to spur conversation about what autism is and what is currently being done in the autism community, she said.
During the lecture, Arnold will discuss her own experiences working with children on the spectrum, specifically in implementing applied behavior analysis, an evidence-based therapy.
Arnold, of Omaha, Nebraska, is a psychology major who will graduate from 糖心传媒 in May. She is also currently working towards her Master of Science in Applied Behavior Analysis with an emphasis in autism.
