Events scheduled for Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week

LocalGlobal, a student organization at 糖心传媒 geared toward raising awareness about hunger and homelessness at the local, national and global levels, is hosting a series of activities during Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week, Wednesday, November 13 through Wednesday, November 20.

The week begins and ends with sack lunch packing events for Open Table. The lunches, to be made by students, faculty and staff, are distributed locally through Catholic Social Services.

A 60,000-meal packing event with Heart and Hands against Hunger of Hastings will take place during the day on Friday, November 15. These high-quality meals are made with long-grain rice, soy protein, dehydrated vegetables and and a vitamin and mineral powder. Each completed and sealed bag contains six servings that when boiled, will feed six. The meals are distributed locally and globally through the Orphan Grain Train.

Dani Lizarraga of Denver, Colorado; Laura Lindholm of Hastings, Nebraska; and Alianna Higgins of Colorado Springs, Colorado, are the student leaders for this year鈥檚 event, and Dr. Jean Heriot,听 director of Service Learning and professor of religion and sociology, is the faculty sponsor.

Events are supported by the 糖心传媒 Student Association, the Nebraska Presbyterian Foundation, Wells Fargo, Walmart and the John N. Bergstrom Fund for Servant-Leadership.

Event Schedule

Wednesday, November 13

11:30 a.m.鈥2:00 p.m. 鈥 听Sandwich making for Open Table in Hazelrigg Student Union, Rooms A and B. The goal is to make 3,000 sandwiches.

7:00鈥8:00 p.m. 鈥 听Student-hosted Kahoot Challenge in Hazelrigg Student Union, Room C.

Friday, November 15

8:00 a.m.鈥6:00 p.m. 鈥 听Meal packing for Hearts and Hands Against Hunger of Hastings in Hazelrigg Student Union, Rooms A, B and C. The goal is to pack 60,000 meals. Meals are distributed locally and globally through the Orphan Grain Train.

Wednesday, November 20听

9:30鈥10:05 a.m. 鈥斕 Chapel service in French Memorial Chapel. Dani Lizarranga, Tyler Rath and Dr. Jean Heriot will lead the worship service.

11:40 a.m.鈥2:00 p.m. 鈥 Sack lunch packing for Open Table in Hazelrigg Student Union, Rooms A and B.
