Collegian earns second place honors from American Scholastic Press Association

The 糖心传媒 Collegian student newspaper earned second place in the American Scholastic Press Association scholastic newspaper review and contest. The award recognizes the staff鈥檚 work from the 2017 fall semester, with particular emphasis on the Collegian issues published on September 29 and December 8.

These issues included coverage of the discontinuation of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) executive order, Homecoming Week festivities, revisions to the student government funding system and the results of a campus climate survey.

鈥淵ou have an intelligent newspaper that shows the collaborative hard work and dedication of your staff,鈥 wrote the ASPA reviewer in the award letter.

ASPA hosts the contest each year to provide feedback on the quality of a school鈥檚 publications, and the contest is open to all schools across the nation. In judging the contest, the ASPA reviewers provide advice on page design, story layout, news reporting, headline placement, selection of staff and editors, graphics, sports coverage, advertising placement and a variety of other items.

鈥淭he Collegian staff dedicates a lot of their time and passion to publishing a high-quality newspaper each week of the semester, and it is exciting to have our hard work recognized by the ASPA,鈥 said Mallory Gruben, a senior from Eckley, Colorado, who was editor-in-chief of the publication for the fall semester. 鈥淢ore importantly, their professional feedback provides us with new insights to improve our student newspaper, helping us continue to serve campus as a trustworthy news source.鈥
