Gregory Heisler, the photographer behind more than 70 cover portraits for TIME Magazine, will speak at ��Ĵ�ý on Thursday, March 31, 2016, at 7 p.m. in French Memorial Chapel (800 N. Turner Ave.). The event, which is sponsored by Canon and the Artist Lecture Series National Speakers Committee and Main Committee, is free and open to the public.

“For ��Ĵ�ý to secure a photographer of Greg’s quality and experience to speak is incredible,” said Brett Erickson, Associate Professor of Journalism and Media Arts. “Attending his lecture is a must not only for people who love photography but also those entranced by history.”

Immediately following the event, Heisler will sign copies of his book: Gregory Heisler: 50 Portraits: Stories and Techniques from a Photographer’s Photographer. A limited number of books will be available for purchase.

Prior to his address, Heisler will conduct a five-hour photography workshop with ��Ĵ�ý students.

Also note that photographer and artist Stephen Petegorsky will present a lecture that’s free and open to the public on Tuesday, March 29 at 7:00 p.m. in Wilson Auditorium. On Wednesday, March 30, he will provide two photography workshops to students. More on Petegorsky.

Bio for Gregory Heisler

Renowned for his technical mastery and thoughtful responsiveness over a career spanning more than 35 years, Gregory Heisler’s enthusiasm, curiosity, and drive are manifested in his hands-on approach to all aspects of the image making process.

Having photographed luminaries ranging from Bill Clinton to Bruce Springsteen, he is perhaps best known for his more than 70 cover portraits for TIME Magazine. His iconic portraits and innovative visual essays have graced the covers of many other magazines, including LIFE, Esquire, Fortune, GQ, GEO, Sports Illustrated, ESPN, and The New York Times Magazine.

He has photographed award-winning advertising campaigns for clients including American Express, Benson & Hedges, Dewar’s Profiles, Ford, Guinness, Reebok, Nike, Merrill Lynch, and United Technologies.

Private portrait commissions are another important focus of his work. The first photographic portrait for New York’s City Hall was his lithographic print of Mayor Edward I. Koch. Most recently, Gregory completed a series of large-scale portraits of noted authors and actors for the National Arts Club in New York City.

Among the kudos he has received are the ASMP Corporate Photographer of the Year Award (1986), the Leica Medal of Excellence (1988), the World Image Award (1991), and the Alfred Eisenstadt Award (2000).

Gregory is a sought-after lecturer and teacher at scores of international seminars. Nationally, he has taught at the International Center of Photography (ICP) and The New School for Social Research, the National Geographic Society, The Smithsonian Institution (Masters of Still Photography Program), the William A. Reedy Memorial Lecture series, Santa Fe Photographic Workshops, Maine Media Workshops, the Hallmark Institute, and in the Master of Fine Arts Program at New York’s School of Visual Arts. He currently holds the position of Distinguished Professor of Photography at the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communication at Syracuse University.

HC Media to Produce NAIA DII Women’s National Basketball Championship Game for ESPN3

For 13 years, ��Ĵ�ý media students have traveled to Sioux City, Iowa, to cover the NAIA DII Women’s National Basketball Championship. What began as covering only the ��Ĵ�ý Bronco Women’s Basketball games expanded into an exclusive contract to develop and provide content for the tournament’s website in addition to streaming video from all games, including the semifinals for ESPN3 – all games except the championship.

This year, that changes, as HC Media students will also produce the championship game for ESPN3.

Chad Power, ��Ĵ�ý Media’s advisor and Chair of the Journalism and Media Arts Department, received word from Corey Westra, the Great Plains Athletic Conference director and national championship director, that HC Media will produce the finals for broadcast on ESPN3.

Westra said ESPN and NAIA had the final decision on who would broadcast the finals, and after reviewing the semifinals broadcast last year, they agreed that HC Media produced an outstanding product and could do the national championship game, too.

That means a busy 31-game broadcast week for ��Ĵ�ý media students, beginning with setup on March 8 and wrapping up with the championship game on March 15.

“I think it’s a feather in the hat for the students now and the students before to set the stage for this opportunity. I think it shows the professionalism that they’ve had throughout the years. Not only in product, but in people,” Westra said. “As a tournament director, they’re always great to have around, they do anything and everything you ask of them, so it’s a win for Sioux City and I think the NAIA is tremendously excited the championship will be broadcast by a school in the NAIA.”

Official Statement from Westra

Westra, who has seen HC Media progress in quality over the years, released this statement explaining the decision to extend the contract through the championship final game:

“We’ve been partnering with ��Ĵ�ý Media for many years up in Sioux City. Throughout those years the quality has continued to get better and better. Last year, the opportunity was given to them to produce the semi-finals. We were in the final year of our contract of the championship final game being covered by a professional broadcast company out of Kansas City. Following the tournament last year, I started some conversations with the NAIA and said ‘What if Hastings Media just did the final?’, and they said they were open to looking at that. They came back and said that it was in the hands of ESPN, along with the NAIA, but ESPN would have a pretty large say. They reviewed the semifinal broadcast of last year and deemed the quality to be outstanding and that they felt we could do the national championship game through HC Media. So we went ahead and made that change.”
